High Demand College Majors and Degrees

by Sr. Editor on June 19, 2008

Colleges always seem to have two types of students on the first day. The first type of student is the one who has had their college major picked out since they were kids. These are the types who knew they wanted to be an engineer, lawyer or doctor from the beginning. The other types of students are the undecided students or the ones who are going with the flow – looking to get a college degree in say business or communication. If you are in that undecided group and need some help figuring out what you want to do with your life, then looking at what is in demand in the workplace is a very practical idea for deciding on a way to go. In the end as great of a major as ‘basket weaving,’ may seem to be, if nobody will employ you it may have been all for nothing.

Healthcare

If you think you might have a penchant for medicine then nursing may be a good choice for you. In most cases you will need a science based college degree and then a master’s degree in nursing or homecare would be rewarding. This field has been a very desirable one in the past few years with a shortage of qualified nurses to care for an aging population. Salaries in the nursing field are very good to start and good money can be found in the job market.

Accounting

The field has grown substantially in the past few years. Whether extra number crunching has been needed in the wake of many corporate scandals, who knows? This is a great field to go into with many large firms willing to compete over qualified undergraduates and those with their master’s degrees and CPA certification. Like the field of nursing, salaries begin in the healthy mid-forties and work their way up. Many accountants specialize their expertise and services then later choose to go to work for themselves, which can be a major attraction if you have an entrepreneurial desire within.

Management

The field of operations management is one that has been taking off for a while. Working in house as an operations manager or working as a consultant can garner big bucks for you. These types of managers are concerned with streaming all aspects of the business from production to hiring and productivity. This field is a very dynamic one as well with new technology constantly offering new opportunities to cut time and costs and change the way businesses are run.

These are just a few of the many hot career fields out there right now, and if you are looking for more information like this, try consulting your colleges’ career counselors or going to a local bookstore. Hot job books and magazines are published all the time. Living in DC, the the job market is strong and great employment opportunities abound.
