How to Stop Solicitors

by on October 1, 2008

If you’re like most Americans, you have so much to do, you don’t know where you are going to find the time. The last thing you want after a long day of work or school is to answer your DC apartment phone only to find out it’s a telemarketer…or to grab your mail and find a huge pile of junk mail to sort through.

With a few simple steps you can drastically reduce the amount of incoming calls and mail. Here’s how to stop solicitors:

Reducing Junk Mail

Opt out – Often in the fine print of financial statements and applications, you will be offered the chance to opt out. This prevents your personal information from being shared with third parties.

Don’t voluntarily share your personal info – When a cashier asks for your phone number or email address, kindly tell them you would prefer to keep that information private.

Contact the company directly – If you are receiving a pile of mail and catalogs you do not want, call the companies directly. Most catalog companies are very receptive if you ask them to remove you from the mailing list. If you still feel uncomfortable asking, you can tell them you will shop online instead.

Sign the ‘Do Not Mail’ Petition – This legislation has not been passed yet but you can get on board to support it. If passed, it would allow you to stop junk mail, the way the Do Not Call Registry allows you to stop phone calls. Not only would it save you time, it is another way you can go green.

Limiting Telemarketer Calls

Get on the ‘Do Not Call’ Registry – This is the best thing since sliced bread! Enter your home and cell phone numbers to stop solicitors from calling you. Due to legislation that went into effect last February, your registration will never expire. You’ll remain on the list permanently. Allow 31 days from the time you register until the calls stop coming in.

Pay for Call Blocking – This is a last resort but you can actually block a certain company from calling, for a fee.

Use Caller ID – Most people have this feature. It allows you to see who’s calling and decide whether you want to pick up. It virtually eliminates the need for you to ever speak with a telemarketer again!

You will have to set aside a little bit of time to make these things happen but the time you save in the long run will be well worth it.

I should harmonise with your point. You break it down so well. I just retweeted your post. BTW, I find your authorship light, and easy to read, can you please recommend some books about writing and blogging? I really treasure it if you can share the one you learned from. Or maybe you can write about it as well. Thank you so much. Looking forward in your next blog post. Respects, — Rose

Last week I dropped by this site and as usual great content and ideas. Love the lay out and color scheme. Is it new? Well I really really like it. Email me the theme at joanbm3@gmail.com. I love the tips on this site, they are always to the point and just the information I was looking for. Its hard to find good content these days in the world of spam and garbage sites.
